Overview

Women experiencing hair loss usually suffer from the so called androgenetic alopecia, better know as female pattern alopecia.

Although alopecia means baldness, when women are concerned, it does not necessarily indicate complete hair loss. Generally, female pattern alopecia affects the crown where hair gets thinner.

One-third of all susceptible women suffer from hair loss, but it is most often seen after menopause. Although some excessive hair loss is seen in androgenetic alopecia, women get panicky when they start to gradually lose hair.

It is normal that a person loses around 100-125 hairs per day.

If a woman's hair is already thin, fewer hairs will fall. In androgenetic alopecia when the affected hair falls, a shorter hair substitutes it. As a result, the receding hair starts resembling 'peach fuzz'. Hair loss can be inherited from any parent or other family member who have experienced it. Androgenetic alopecia may begin during puberty as a result of hormone imbalance. The first signs of it are excess facial or body hair in which cases a hormone evaluation should be done. On the whole, hormone imbalance is one of the most common causes of female hair loss.
Many women are surprised when they start losing hair after pregnancy or when they are not consistent in taking birth control pills.
Hair loss may also be the result of sudden physical or psychological stress. Such types of hair loss are called 'Telogen Effluvium' and are considered temporary.

The hair may need up to 8 months in order to fully re-grow.
