Hair loss in men

Overview
The most common type of hair loss affects men.
Its cause is the increased sensitivity to androgens - male sex hormones - particularly on parts of the scalp, and it is passed on from generation to generation. This sensitivity results in shrinkage of the hair follicles.
Eventually, they become too small to replace lost hairs. Although the follicles are still alive, they can no longer take part in hair growth cycles.
Hair loss usually affects men between teh ages of 20 and 30 and develops in a typical way. In the first phase, a receding hairline develops and after some time the hair on top of the head also starts thinning.
In the long run, the two balding spots form a U-shape around the back and sides of the head. The remaining hair is thinner and grows more slowly than before.
Male hair loss is determined by genetics and is passed on from parents to the children.
