Avodart

Avodart is the brand name for Dutasteride.
This is a synthetic 4-azasteroid compound that blocks both types of 5-alpha reductase – the enzyme responsible for the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body.
DHT is actually the main androgen that causes male pattern baldness.

The active ingredient in Avodart is 0.5mg of dutasteride in combination with butylated hydroxytoluene and mono-di-glycerides caprylic/capric acid. Other ingredients are glycerin, BSE-free bovine gelatin and yellow ferric oxide. Since the medication is also absorbed through the skin you can even compound your own Dutasteride topical solution.

Dutasteride’s raw form is a white-yellowish powder which can be dissolved in methanol (64 mg/mL), ethanol (44mg/mL), and polyethylene glycol 400 (3mg/mL). It is evaluated that the standard dose of Dutasteride for an effective treatment varies between 0.01 and 5.0 mg daily which is proved to be the highest achieved suppression of DHT. The maximum effect may be observed after 1 to 2 weeks.

Warnings and special precautions:
1) Since Avodart™ is prescribed to men only, it should not be taken by women or children.
2) Pregnant women or those who may be pregnant should avoid handling Avodart™ since there are certain risks to a male child.
3) While using Avodart™ men should not donate blood. You can donate blood only after a minimum of 6 months from the last used medication.
4) If you have certain liver problems discuss using Avodart™ with your doctor.
5) Some men experience side effects such as lowered sexual desire or decreased libido and/or decreased volume of ejaculate. These problems, however, decrease in the duration of treatment.

Dosage for hairloss:
1 capsule of 0.5mg daily is to be taken orally with or without food. However, a daily dose of 2.5mg seems to lead to better results. 0.5mg Dutasteride inhibits about 92% serum DHT and 55% scalp DHT 2.5mg Dutasteride inhibits about 95% serum DHT and 82% scalp DHT
