Women are less adaptive to their hair loss and have a considerably more negative self-image. The Journal of Women's Health and Gender-Based Medicine published a study in 1999 which reported that hair loss in women is highly associated with feeling of powerlessness, self-consciousness and jealousy. But various studies have showed that pattern baldness in both women and men leads to lowered self-esteem and not only to dissatisfaction with one's appearance. Other measures of self-worth are also lowered.
