Reasons and treatment
Alopecia areata
Alopecia areata is a skin disease that causes hair loss not only on the scalp but sometimes on the body as well.
The disease affects up to 1.7% of the population and is considered to be an autoimmune disease, i.e. the person's own immune system damages the hair follicles.
Alopecia areata leads to total hair loss only in rare cases. It begins by causing the hair to fall out in a few select places. The disease can affect men as well as women.
The disease's outcome is usually in the childhood and the hair can grow back after six months to two years, but this is not obligatory.
The disease occurs when white blood cells mistakenly attack hair follicles, resulting in a loss of hair growth. Some individuals only experience minor hair loss, with growth resuming within a year or so, but others may develop alopecia totalis, a condition in which all the hair on the scalp is lost. Alopecia unversalis results in hair loss all over the body.
While unpleasant, the hair should grow back again, and it is even possible without treatment and regardless of time.
